Frequently Asked Questions

The most common questions asked about using the no-pull dog harness.

Many owners have reported that using no pull front clip harnesses have made a big difference in their ability to control their dog's movement. Chest strap leash attachments disrupt and discourage pulling behavior and brings the focus back to the dog owner.

To an excited or energetic dog, humans are simply too slow. In these cases, pulling is natural because they are excited to interact with their environment, and humans simply slow the process down.  What’s more, if a dog pulls once on the leash and gets where they want to be, they quickly establish that this behavior walks.

Often this happens without an owner realizing it.  They may stop and talk to a friend, and their dog may pull a little, causing the owner to take an unconscious step after their dog. This reward is enough to make most dogs try another tug. Before long, they may be serial pullers. After all, if it works, why not?

Pulling can even give a dog a sense of achievement if they really put the effort into dragging an owner to where they want to be. They are simply learning that reaching their goals means a bit more effort.

No-Pull Dog Harness Buyer’s Guide

Is a no-pull harness right for your dog? Learn more in our Ultimate Harness Buyers Guide

Having a dog that pulls on the leash does more than just make going for a walk unpleasant and a nuisance. A dog that treats a walk like a tug of war competition is a danger to itself and others for several reasons.

Firstly,  a pulling dog uses a standard collar or a choke chain collar, often doing serious long-term damage to their throats and tracheas that owners may be unaware of.

Secondly, large and powerful breeds are a risk to their handlers, as they can yank their pet parents to the ground or worse. Even feisty small breeds are a problem, as they can jerk-free and find themselves in serious danger, such as by running into oncoming traffic.

If you have a dog who pulls, switching to a No-Pull Harness is simply the best way to eliminate pulling behaviors and enjoy a pleasent easy walk.

Why do dogs pull

Why Do Dogs Pull

Dogs have a natural urge to get where they are going as quickly as possible. To them, the leash can be nothing but a restrictive hindrance if they catch an interesting scent or see a squirrel. Some people also theorize that a dog that tends to pull is trying to show leadership, a desire that stems from a dogs’ pack mentality. Loose and retractable leashes only exacerbate pulling behaviours, letting dogs test the limits.

But ultimately, pulling is a learned behavior. If a yank or a tug worked once to get a dog to the dog park a bit faster, there is a reason for them to do it again. Ultimately if good behavior on the leash isn’t shaped from a young age, dogs also have no reason to know what good behavior looks like. Much like a child is taught to read or how to eat with a knife or a fork, a puppy cannot be expected to know leash etiquette automatically.

How do no pull dog harnesses work

How Do No-Pull Dog Harnesses Work?

A front-clip harness has a D-shaped ring at the front of the dog or chest area. The leash is therefore positioned in front of the dog. This means that if the dog pulls against you, their own action turns them toward you, rather than allowing them to drag you along behind them.

Both the front clip and the back clip attachments are points of contact between the leash and the harness. However, the back clip leash attachment is considered to work more like a traditional leash because it connects to the back of the dog.

The front clips are the defining features of a good no-pull harness because the leash attaches to the dog's chest area. This means that they cannot pull against you the way they normally would. Any pulling, or a gentle tug from you, turns them around to face you. This way they are not rewarded by being able to drag you where they want to go.

Together with obedience training, a good no-pull harness helps minimize and even prevent pulling altogether.

So what is the safest way to reduce or stop pulling for your dog?

A no-pull harness is designed to naturally give the control you need over your dog, and take the strain off their neck.  It is made to fit your particular dog's size and build, and makes pulling uncomfortable. So your dog learns to walk obediently beside you without any need for extreme measures.

Selecting the Best No-Pull Harness for Your Dog

It’s tricky finding the right no-pull harness for a dog that likes to pull. The market has so many options and features, it’s hard to know what to look for and what’s best for your dog. To help you figure this out, we created a complete guide to dog harnesses to help you figure out exactly what you need.

The best dog harness features

Key Features to Look For in a No-Pull Dog Harness

There are so many no-pull dog harnesses on the market today. Some range at the lower end at around 15 dollars while others are more expensive at 50 dollars or more. With so many options available, choosing one may seem like a tedious task.

For this reason, we have analyzed various features to be on the lookout for when trying to decide on the right harness for your beloved dog.

Key features to look for in a no-pull dog harness
Front clip

Front Clip Leash Attachment

The front clip leash attachment is a minimally invasive point placed on the chest, giving you control of a dog’s upper body without straining their throat. The front clip attachment is an easy and natural dog training tool.

Since the D-ring attachment falls on the dog’s chest instead of behind them, they naturally pivot around toward you when they pull. This makes pulling counterproductive, as they aren’t getting where they want to go, and can’t be dragged along.

In essence, a front-clip leash attachment gives you more control without you needing to resort to punitive measures. It is fantastic as part of a coherent obedient training program to teach your dog to walk calmly at your side.

Rear clip

Rear Clip Leash Attachment

The D-ring for the rear clip leash attachment is at the top of the harness, usually between or just behind the shoulders. The leash control is back-focused, meaning the leash will be pulled from behind the dog, and you. This has the benefit of giving you control of the dog’s upper body but has less hassle with leashes getting entangled in their front legs. By discouraging pulling behaviours, your furry friend will be walking nicely in no time.

Once training with the front clip has proved successful, you can switch to the ring on the back of the harness for a normal walking experience.

Reflective trim

Reflective Trim

Reflective material in the trim is an essential safety feature of every harness. This helps to enhance visibility in low-light situations where your dog would otherwise be virtually invisible.  Whether you are walking before sunrise or at night, or whether you have been caught in the rain or fog, it is vital that any oncoming traffic can see your dog.

The reflective strips work by bouncing light from a source. This means that it will not be visible in pure darkness, but it will glow at even the slightest appearance of light. It's therefore essential to carry a torch to ensure good visibility.

Fully adjustable

Fully Adjustable Straps

Dog harnesses come in various sizes, but this does not guarantee the right fit for your dog’s specific body type. All straps should be as adjustable as possible to ensure the right fit, so that whether you have a Basset or an Afghan Hound, the harness can be adapted to snuggly fit your pup’s natural contours. This is especially important for the neck strap on heavy pulling dogs.

Soft nylon webbing

Soft Nylon Webbing

A nylon webbing is smooth, soft, and, most of all, it’s comfortable. This material is durable and easy to clean. Crucially, it is breathable and allows air to reach your dog’s skin. Wider straps will ensure your dog is comfortable and gives better control over their movements. The chew proof fabric ensures even the toughest cant get through.

Padded chest plate

Padded Chest Plate

A padded chest plate is beneficial for training because it distributes the force and weight evenly across and around the chest instead of just on the throat. The lightweight mesh padding and wide straps ensure your dog's comfort and also serves as a safety feature for their breast and rib cage.
